Working with clients with alcohol and other drug (AOD) and trauma issues

This 3-day training focuses on working from a safety perspective with clients with AOD and trauma issues. The following topics are covered: brief overview of the impact of trauma; working with alcohol and other drug issues in the context of trauma; emotion management interventions; working with shame; attachment, parenting and relationships; and vicarious trauma.

The training has so far been delivered twice, titled ‘Working with women with alcohol and other drug and trauma issues’, but is applicable to both men and women. The training has received excellent feedback on both occasions. It is suitable for clinicians who work with clients with alcohol and other drug and complex trauma issues and already have basic skills in working with alcohol and other issues.

Resources that accompany the training are oriented towards working with women, but the content is applicable to both men and women. The resources were produced as part of the ‘Improving Services for Women with Drug and Alcohol and Mental Health Issues and their Children Project’ and include:

  • A written treatment guide: Trauma-informed treatment guide for working with women with alcohol and other drug issues
  • A training package to guide the three days of training.
  • Two DVDs (one explaining the need for trauma-informed treatment and the other covering the trauma, its impact, and treatment implications).

For further information about this training please contact Fiona Reid or Sue Lee on (08) 6330 5400.
