Family & Domestic Violence

Womens Health and Family Services offers support services and advocacy for women who have experienced, or are at risk of domestic violence.

Relationship Questions

It is important to be aware of what is and is not acceptable behaviour in a relationship.
Does your partner:

  • Put you down or call you names
  • Slap, shove, kick you or your children
  • Want to control your life (including who you see or talk to)
  • Make decisions for you
  • Want to know where you are all the time
  • Force you to have sex
  • Forbid you to go out or use the phone
  • Threaten you or your children
  • Refuse you any money
  • Deny responsibility for abusive behaviour (Say it’s not their fault - 'you made them do it.')

If any of these things are happening to you, you are in an abusive relationship. Domestic Violence is intentional behaviour and tactics used to establish power and control over another person. It can happen regardless of class, education, cultural or religious background. It can be emotional, physical, sexual, economic or psychological control.
